UNLV director of athletics Erick Harper said, “Football lost a legend today. Coach Robinson was revered by his players, peers, fans and co-workers.”

Harper added, “He led a wonderful life on and off the football field at so many places, including here at UNLV as both a coach and administrator. Our thoughts and prayers go out to John’s family as we remember all that he did for the sport nationally and right here in Las Vegas.”
John Madden
Robinson, born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, attended high school with John Madden. He played tight end at the University of Oregon and began coaching there as an assistant from 1960 to 1971.
Oakland Raiders
Robinson later moved to USC as an offensive coordinator and later joined the Oakland Raiders under John Madden as a running backs coach. The Raiders reached the AFC Championship during his time.
Marcus Allen and Ronnie Lott
Robinson led USC as head coach from 1976 to 1982 and 1993 to 1997. He achieved a national championship, four conference titles, and a 104-35-4 record, with players like Marcus Allen and Ronnie Lott.
Strong performances
Robinson’s USC teams were especially known for their strong performances in bowl games, achieving a 7-1 record during his tenure.
Los Angeles Rams
In 1983, Robinson became head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, turning a struggling team into playoff contenders. He led them to six playoff appearances and two NFC Championships, with a 75-68 record.
Hall of Fame
Robinson was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009, recognizing his significant contributions to the sport.
