TheBigLead.com is learning that a high school hockey player in New York recently passed away after collapsing during a charity game. Connor Kasin, a 17-year-old senior at Massapequa High School, collapsed during a game at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage, Long Island.
Massapequa High School stated, “It is heartbreaking to report that Connor did not survive. His passing is devastating to the Massapequa community, and we offer our deepest condolences to Connor’s family and friends.”
Kasin lost consciousness between periods. Bystanders performed CPR until first responders arrived, but he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The game was a charity event honoring Sabrina Navaretta, a Syosset High School graduate who died in a car crash. It aimed to raise funds for grieving parents.
One of his coaches, Jeff Tempone, said, “It was devastating. He’s a 17-year-old kid. He’s got his whole life ahead of him.”
Authorities said no criminality was suspected, and the cause of Kasin’s death remains unknown.
Seven middle and high school football players died in August of this year, sparking concerns about youth sports safety. The causes ranged from heatstroke to head and traumatic injuries.
The victims included players aged 13 to 16 from states like West Virginia, Alabama, and Kansas. Their deaths occurred during games or practices across the country.
Parents and advocates urged schools to prioritize safety measures like Guardian Caps, hydration protocols, and emergency action plans to prevent further tragedies.
Experts noted the need for stricter enforcement of existing safety laws. Advocates stressed that the health and safety of young athletes must take precedence over the game.
Two athletes died during the Torremolinos-Andalucia Triathlon Championship Finals on October 17, the first day of the event, according to World Triathlon. The victims included a British competitor, whose identity and cause of death were not disclosed, and 75-year-old Roger Mas Colomber from Mexico.
