Tansgender athlete Blaire Fleming
TheBigLead.com is learning that transgender athlete Blaire Fleming recently broke records in women’s volleyball at San Jose State University (SJSU). The achievements, however, were largely overshadowed by controversy. Teams have boycotted matches against SJSU, citing fairness and safety concerns due to Fleming’s physical advantages.

In this slideshow, we further assess Fleming’s success, as well as what critics are saying.

Unfair due to his physical advantages
Fleming officially has more than 250 kill shots, ranking Fleming among the top in all of women’s volleyball. Five teams, including Nevada and Utah, have boycotted games against SJSU. They argued that Fleming’s participation was unfair due to Fleming’s physical advantages.

Nevada Women’s Volleyball captain Sia Li’ili’i recently stated, “As a Division 1 athlete, I have worked my whole life to live out my dreams of competing at this level. This is a dream I see in my nieces as they watch me play. I don’t want them to be faced with competing for a roster spot against a male with significant biological advantages. That is not fair!”
This is not what we signed up for
Nevada had refused to forfeit a match against Fleming, which Li’ili’i felt was unfair. “When the news broke, I was stunned, as many of my teammates were. This is not what we signed up for,” Li’ili’i said.
Given a voice
Li’ili’i stated, “Our university had made a decision for us. They released a statement on our behalf saying we were going to play. We were not consulted. We were not given a voice, and we did not agree.”
Knowing that we are all on our own
Li’ili’i added, “It hurt knowing our university was putting us in a position that could potentially hurt us. My teammates and I were very emotional, and I’m not sure, I cannot put into words how it feels to face something like this and knowing that we are all on our own.”
Criticizing SJSU's trans-inclusion policy
Assistant coach Melissa Batie-Smoose was suspended after opposing Fleming’s inclusion. She filed a Title IX complaint, criticizing SJSU’s trans-inclusion policy.
Adding to the controversies
Allegations recently surfaced of a plot involving Fleming to injure teammate Brooke Slusser, adding to the controversies.
During the game
Court documents read, “[Chandler] Manusky said that at Jones’ residence Fleming had shared with Jones the scouting for the CSU-FC game and they had discussed Fleming ‘throw[ing] the game’ and how they would set up Jones to ‘blow up’ Slusser and ‘blast’ her in the face during the game.”
Court documents added
Court documents added, “Manusky also said that Fleming stated, ‘I’m going to leave center court open,’ which would allow Malaya Jones to have a wide-open shot to try to ‘blow up Slusser,’ i.e., to try to hit Brooke Slusser in the face with the ball.”
